EMDR

EMDR Therapy In Geelong: Working with Memory to Create Change

EMDR therapy focuses on processing memories that underpin current challenging symptoms or behaviours. Many psychological difficulties will trace back to a memory where a person learned a belief or way to cope with life.

EMDR helps process these emotions and beliefs that are stuck in the past, allowing you to connect with a more present, grounded, adult sense of yourself. It is an experiential therapy, meaning it guides you through an inner process that can create lasting changes in the way you think, feel, and behave, rather than relying primarily on homework exercises.

EMDR Process

Preparation Phase

The first, and often most important, part of EMDR is the preparation phase. This involves taking a broad history and mapping out memories that have had a lasting impact. It also includes developing regulation strategies and ways to stay present, as well as doing parts work to better understand and build compassion for the parts of you that have helped you cope and get this far in life.

Once we have developed enough safety and regulation, we can begin gently exploring the emotions and beliefs held within traumatic memories. Part of this process involves using Bilateral Stimulation (BLS), such as moving your eyes from left to right or tapping alternately on either side of the body. This helps the mind process traumatic material in a more adaptive way. Throughout the process, we stay connected to the present and use regulation strategies to support changes in how the memory is stored in both the mind and body.

Final Phase

The final phase of therapy involves integrating these changes into your life. This may include making changes that reflect a new sense of internal safety, or reconnecting with qualities of yourself that had been hidden or overshadowed by trauma. Over time, this can support a greater sense of ease, connection, and freedom in daily life.
